Snoop Wins Prestigious “I Am Hip-Hop” Award
The 2016 BET Hip Hop Awards was taped over the weekend and word is the show is a bit heavier than it has been in recent years. T.I. performed “We Will Not” with a Black Lives Matter backdrop and it’s also being reported Big KRIT and Lecrae did poems about the current movement as well.
On the other side, Snoop Dogg is being given the “I Am Hip-Hop” award and had some words of wisdom to share with “all the young rappers in the game.”

“To all the young rappers in the game, a lot of people don’t understand you. Y’all are misunderstood,” he said with Kendrick Lamar watching at his side. “I was misunderstood at the beginning. So you got to keep pushing, be original and diverse. Hip-hop was created many years ago and it’s taken people so many places. You have to be who you are.”
Kendrick Lamar, who was on stage at the time Snoop gave his speech, informed the crowd of how much of an effect watching Snoop has had on his career.
Lamar later acknowledged The Doggfather’s contributions to the game. “He mastered the game through tests and challenges that earned him the respect of a college professor, except his game came from the streets,” Lamar said. “He put (me) on game, so I would avoid the same pitfalls. … Snoop Dogg was the God, and continues to be so.”
Additional notes from the event include Kevin Hart rapper entering the cipher as his alter ego “Chocolate Droppa,” Kendrick Lamar winning “Lyricist of the Year,” and Chance the Rapper winning “Best New Hip Hop Artist.”
