“He’s a great guy…”—Sanaa Lathan

Sanaa Lathan Talks Her New FOX Show “Shots Fired”

During the National Association of Black And Hispanic Journalists conference BOSSIP was given a first look at a new FOX series debuting this fall.

Titled “Shots Fired”, the show follows the aftermath of a racially charged shooting involving a black cop played by Tristan “Mack” Wilds and a white teenager.

Taking center stage in the show is Sanaa Lathan who plays investigator Ashe Bell alongside Stephan James who takes on the role of Preston Terry, the all business Special Prosecutor taking precarious steps to find answers.

After viewing the first episode, BOSSIP chatted with the makers of the program and Sanaa about the on-screen chemistry between the two lead roles.

“This is a mystery, it’s a social drama but it’s also a love story,” said Gina Prince-Bythewood who co-created the show with her husband Director Reggie Rock Bythewood. “Their chemistry was there in the audition, it was exciting to see.”

According to Sanaa however she had some hangups about playing the 22-year-old’s on-screen love interest considering the 22 year age difference between them.

“I was nervous,” said Sanaa.” I was like ‘I don’t want to look like his mama.’ I’m just being honest, he’s a lot younger. I did a lot of chemistry reads, that was a whole process, I met a lot of fine actors,” she added.

“When I say fine I mean…you know, good actors. [laughs] It’s funny because I didn’t feel chemistry with anybody but she [Gina] could see it. It’s chemical, chemistry really is chemical so I guess Stephan and I had that chemistry. He’s a great guy, he’s up and coming, a good person and a hard worker. He gives a phenomenal performance.”

The compelling drama will air before episodes of “Empire” this fall presumably taking the place of Morris Chestnut’s “Rosewood.”

Will YOU be watching “Shots Fired”??? It’s definitely worth a tune-in.
