Multifaceted entertainer Nick Cannon came into the Okay Space to speak with Mankaprr Conteh about new music, gender issues and women who influenced him.
A few weeks ago, Okayplayer had the multifaceted entertainer Nick Cannon in the Okay Space for an episode of “The Questions”. Entering into the room with an uncharacteristic calm, the actor-producer-musician sat down with Mankaprr Conteh, a celebrated personality in her own right, to discuss the new music he’s working on, gender issues that go on within the industry and “Motivation,” a song from his upcoming album Model Music.

“I’m a musician at heart,” said Cannon, who was playing instruments and DJing before we stopped-looked-and-watched him on Nickelodeon’s All That. Still, from being clowned by Wild ’N Out castmates to critical reception more largely, Cannon knows many take him more seriously on screen than out of the stereo.
“It often frustrated me early on in my career,” he said. “I wish I would have introduced myself to the world [as] a producer or a musician first…sometimes people compartmentalize an artist.”
But with Cannon telling us that Suge Knight has personally compared him to Tupac Shakur, we can see why the Viacom veteran ain’t gon let up. One of his latest singles, “Motivation (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SxblKalbT6g),” is an ode to women, its video featuring elder ones like his 98-year-old great-grandmother passing their advice down to younger generations.

“I heard Tupac say about Prince, ‘I love women the way Prince loves women.’ I love women the way both of them loved women,” Cannon laughed. But statements like that make us wonder — when should that love look like challenging men to own up to their misogyny?
