RiRi, noting how K.Dot’s award has even bigger implications, shared a cartoon graphic of herself and Compton Kenny via her Instagram Story. “Congrats to my boy #KungFuKenny on making history and winning such a prestigious award like a Pulitzer!” she wrote. “Keep showing the kids that anything is possible man.”

DAMN., Kendrick Lamar’s most recent album, became the first non-classical or jazz work to earn the award. According to The Boston Globe, the Pulitzer board called the album, “a work that captures the complexity of African American life.”

“The important thing about this is the jury and the board just decided that the album is a word of vernacular avant-guard,” Pulitzer Prize board administrator Dana Canedy said. “It’s a dense and sophisticated collage of hybrid sounds, polyrhythms, layered under what we would probably consider pulsing kinetic text. The brilliance of the music is what shone through.”
