One person hopes to take down a Confederate monument in Olde Towne and replace it with Portsmouth, Va. native, Missy Elliott.

The number one hot topic across the country that doesn’t have to squarely deal with Donald Drumpf is whether or not to take down Confederate monuments. While we here @Okayplayer believe that all reminders of slavery and treason need to be abolished, the debate has sparked a much-needed conversation in this country. One person, a man named Nathan Coflin, of Portsmouth, Virginia, wants to do his part by removing a Confederate monument and replacing it with a statue of rapper and fellow native, Missy Elliott.

Coflin started a petition on Change.org, which you can sign here, in hopes of gaining support for the removal and replacement of the Olde Towne statue. “Who better to encapsulate the culture and spirit of the city enshrined in a new monument than Grammy Award winning rapper, dancer and record producer, Missy “Misdemeanor” Elliott?” Coflin wrote in the synopsis of the petition.

Elliott, born Melissa Arnette Elliott, in Portsmouth, Virginia on July 1, 1971 has had a stellar career in movies, television and music, producing numerous hit records. The petition, which has over 1,000 signatures, will be presented to Mayor John L. Rowe, Vice Mayor Paige Cherry, and the Portsmouth City Council upon reaching its goal. “Together, we can put white supremacy down, flip it and reverse,” the petition reads. “Join me in getting City Council to recent this statue in honor of all those in the great City of Portsmouth who work it each and every day.”
