Christopher Bailey held his final ever show for Burberry on February 17, hosting his joint men's and women's 2018 fall/winter collection during London Fashion Week. The collection was shown at Dimco buildings and was as packed as you'd expect for a seminal collection, with visitors — including Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss arm-in-arm with Blondey McCoy and Thor Ragnarok's Tessa Thompson — having to work around the large crowd of anti-fur protestors outside the venue.
The brand collaborated with United Visual Artists, who recreated its 2016 installation Our Time for the start of the show. The collection itself recreated key pieces from its archives, playing heavily with its famed check pattern, with the rainbow check made to support the LGBTQ+ community being used on a variety of pieces from puffa jackets to baseball caps. The styling of the collection was decidedly '90s, with models styled in a way that recalled the kind of football casual hooligan image that Burberry once worked so hard to avoid.
The last exit of the show was Cara Delevigne, who came out in a floor length coat and caused most of the showgoers to reach for their camera phones. A dazzling laser show put a cap on the end of a 17-year tenure at Burberry for Bailey who, after the show, said to The FT “The show was a point of positive reflection. I’m trying to make some sense of the chaos in the world. There are so many questions. About our culture, about our habits, about shopping, about how we consume, how we see fashion, how we buy it."
