Tai Allen, an award-winning poet and soul singer, has toured the world bringing realness and authenticity to crowds who love it. Now, in an attempt to turn his revelatory vibes into a confessional meant to help those who have been hurt by love.

Tai’s debut collection of poetry, titled, No Jewels, uses poetry and songs to create a narrative around losing his innocence due to abuse and weaponized love. Along with its accompanying soundtrack, Flowered Concrete, will be out on May 16. Coming through as a 20-poem chapbook, No Jewels reinterprets classic literary forms such as triolets and haiku to tell the story of a young man’s loss of innocence.

“There’s a lot of trauma in the world, in this story,” Allen explained in a released statement. “But, even in the midst of that, the collection is about finding yourself. You can emerge on the other side.” His first single, “The Drinking Song,” a tongue-in-cheek exploration of how to think and feel better after a good drink, is an intoxicating song that is worth replaying numerous times.

With that said, Tai Allen exhibits Herculean strength on No Jewels as he opens up as a black father telling a survivor story, which makes him and his effort a voice for the voiceless.

No Jewels and Flowered Concrete will be available on all digital platforms on May 16, 2017.
